We’ve heard about so many kinds of scams being perpetrated on us over the years, and it’s rare for me to find a new one that I believe is important enough to tell you about, but this one definitely fits into that category.

This one specific scamming incident that I’m mentioning here happened in 2024, but with today’s ever-improving AI audio and video technologies, it’s only going to get easier for something like this to happen to us.

So with this being said, the world-famous British design and engineering company, Arup, was the victim of a greater than $25 million scam, that featured an employee being invited into an online meeting, where they both saw and were talking along with their company’s Chief Financial Officer, along with other company employees, too.

However, these visual and talking experiences of the company employees weren’t real, but they seemed very real to the employee who was invited to attend the online meeting.

Then during the meeting, the employee was instructed to wire more than $25 million to various recipients, and since the employee was convinced that their Chief Financial Officer was the one telling them to do this, the employee complied, and then wired the money.

But this was just a scam that seemed so very authentic to the employee, because both the visual and auditory components of the entire experience seemed real and legitimate to them, right in the moment.

So when learning about this, I began thinking, “What if someone tried to do this, while doing a video call along with an escrow officer, a lender, a title company representative, a broker, or a principal involved in a transaction, right as wiring instructions were then needed to fund the closing of a transaction?”

And this thought is one big reason why I’m telling you about this story right now.
